Description

I recently attempted to image the day old moon during a conjunction with Venus. Well, I wasn't able to capture the conjunction, but after much searching and fiddling with the equipment I was able to locate and image (barely) the 1% illuminated Moon on May 12, 2021. Due to obstructions along the horizon, I had to setup the scope with an IR filter to image in the late afternoon, align on the Sun, then slew to and search for the Moon. Boy was it tough to make out the slender crescent against the bright background sky. Venus was easier to find but unfortunately my FOV wasn't large enough to get the Moon and Venus in the same frame. After my relative success on May 12th, thanks to clear skies I was able to capture the young Moon on the subsequent two nights growing to 4% illuminated on May 13th (started to make out some craters along the limb), and 9% on May 14th. A fun project and I have some ideas on how to better capture the very young moon if weather cooperates in the coming months...

Imaged with WO GT81 refractor at F/5.9 (478 mm focal length) , Baader 685nm IR pass Filter, and ZWO ASI174MM. Image capture using Firecapture. Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 25% of 1000 frames). Processed in Registax (initial wavelet sharpening), and PixInsight (multiple rounds of histogram transformation and curves transformation to crush the background and pull up the crescent moon).
